Why is it called "Vector"?

Ian Crafford
CEO | Vector
Vector means a quantity having both direction and magnitude.

What’s with the name “Vector”?
Vector means a quantity having both direction and magnitude.
I named my business “Vector” because that definition is central to what I do: I help you grow your business (magnitude) toward your considered goals (direction).
Furthermore:
- Despite what our culture suggests, magnitude is NOT itself direction. Things like calling, identity, purpose, vision, mission matter—in human terms of course and also in real, practical “solving business problems” terms.
- Secondly, in air traffic control contexts, “vectoring” refers to an air traffic controller providing navigational guidance to an aircraft…which is a tidy analogy for my advisory role: I neither pilot your airplane or dictate your destination; I just help you navigate the journey and the stormy weather en route.
- Finally, a “vector graphic” scales without distortion. That’s a nice analogy for how I help founders develop the systems and process so that they can scale their business without distorting the vision, culture, or impact that motivated them to start in the first.
When I began Vector, I worked primarily as an embedded fractional Ops leader within my client’s business (e.g. Fractional COO). As I saw the same patterns and problems, I began formalizing the framework, tools, and treatments that would become VIP | Vector Integrator Program.
Now, I deliver services in the VIP program, conduct topical intensives, and connect coaches in community.
I named my business “Vector” because that definition is central to what I do: I help you grow your business (magnitude) toward your considered goals (direction).
